Multi-day Treks
Roam the upper reaches of the Mackenzie
Basin with its towering ranges and glacial headwaters on a
multi-day trek tailored to individual groups. Trek over
privately-owned country nestled beneath the Southern Alps and
experience a night or two in high country mustering huts, or camp
out next to a braided river that feeds Lake Tekapo. Enjoy
first-hand the country and scenery of historic working high country
sheep stations that many admire but few ever actually experience.
An example of a six-day trek:
Day 1: Ride out across the tussock plains of
Balmoral Station and over the Old Man Range, where you will
experience views of Aoraki Mt Cook and Lake Pukaki. Camp is spent
at Irishman Creek on western side of the range.
Day 2: Spend the day riding across Braemar
Station up to Maryburn Hut where you can look across Lake Pukaki
to the mighty Ben Omar Range and at the head of the valley New
Zealand’s highest peaks.
Day 3: From Maryburn hut we drop into the
Forks River Valley on Glenmore Station, for a night spent in The
Forks hut.
Day 4: Head down The Forks River and cross
through Mt Joseph onto the edge of the Cass River, a tributary of
Lake Tekapo, where camp is set up for the night.
Day 5: A short day riding, it is a wander
from the Cass River down through Godley Peaks Country to the edge
of Lake Tekapo where there will be a free afternoon, maybe spent
fishing, claybird shooting or just relaxing in the surrounding
scenery.
Day 6: The final day sees us cross the Cass
River and follow the shores of Lake Tekapo, homeward bound.
